How to ... conduct an OHS committee meeting

Definition: An OHS Committee is a representative group of employer and employee representatives who meet in a cooperative way to improve systems for managing health and safety in the workplace.

Effective meetings rely on:

  • planning
  • agreed procedures
  • agreed agenda
  • participation
  • control
  • clarity
  • responsibility
At the first meeting:
  • agree on procedures
Before the meeting:
  • prepare a draft agenda
  • review previous minutes
  • check outstanding issues
  • ask for agenda items
  • prioritise agenda items
  • give notice of meeting
  • display agenda in the workplace
At the meeting:
  • start and finish on time
  • record absences and apologies
  • review agenda
  • review and approve or amend previous minutes
  • review previous matters listed for action
  • confine discussion to agenda items
  • focus on resolving issues
  • ensure clear outcomes
  • confirm next meeting date and time
After the meeting:
  • write up minutes
  • action all items
  • display minutes in workplace
