How to ... find a material safety data sheet

Definition: A material safety data sheet is a compilation of information on the identity of chemicals, health and physical hazards, exposure limits, and precautions.

A manufacturer (or importer) of a substance must prepare and supply a material safety data sheet for the substance before the substance is supplied to another person for use at work.

Most chemical suppliers make MSDS's available on their web sites. Some chemical suppliers have an MSDS CD. If you are using a particular suppliers's chemical then you must use that supplier's MSDS for that chemical.

UNSW uses the MSDS database ChemAlert. All staff have free access to ChemAlert.

The following links will take you directly to the major MSDS sites. Some foreign MSDS's may not be written to local standards. Use Australian sites and companies whenever possible.
